    Breast Augmentation

What’s in a name: Breast Augmentation

Part of what is so confusing about cosmetic surgery for your breasts the number of names it is given. Breast Enhancement, Augmentation Mammaplasty, Surgical Breast Implantation, Breast Enlargement, Breast Augmentation, and, lets not forget, Boob Job, are all names for the same surgical procedure.

No matter what you call it, it is simply a procedure where an implant of some kind, usually made of artificial materials, is inserted into the skin of the breast in order to create a larger, fuller appearance. Breast Augmentation is typically combined with a breast lift, to remove unwanted and unnecessary skin which is the result of stretching, and which causes the breasts to sag.

There are two primary reasons that women seek breast enhancement: the first is that they want larger breasts, and the second is that they want a back a fuller look. These women see breast enhancement as a way to restore their breasts to a previous state after a body altering event, like significant weight loss pregnancy, or surgical alteration. In the later case, breast reconstruction can occasionally be accomplished without implantation.

In these cases, tissue is removed from other areas of the body, usually the back or butt, and inserts into the area where it is needed. This is commonly used for women who suffer breast reduction or removal as the result of cancer, but who object to having cosmetic breast implants. Occasionally, tissue can be taken off of the abdomen, and placed into the breast.

This is beneficial because it is a very similar tissue to the original breast, and it gives the stomach a flatter more contoured look. Those considering breast augmentations or breast uplift with implants should look at all their implantation options, the most common of which include saline and silicone implants, and discuss those options with her physician before undergoing an operation.
